It’s spring holidays here. The Easter weekend is just over and as I write we should be sitting on a plane on our way to Greece to celebrate again next weekend with my hubbie. But we’re not. Week 5 of lockdown has just begun and so we are sitting at home. All travel plans have been cancelled for the coming months and if we are very lucky my hubbie will make it home at the start of July, which is the earliest he could rebook his cancelled flight for. I can’t say we are happy about it, but it is what it is, and, while there may be tears and tantrums at times, we’re getting on with it as best we can.

Last week was a busy one. The boys, in particular my older son, had school work to finish off and hand in. We nearly got there, but not quite so there is still a little work to finish off this week. With the unseasonably warm, dry, blue sky weather continuing we did more tidying in the garden and cut the grass for the first time this season.

And then it was the Easter weekend. It was quite a relief to be able to switch off for the weekend. The were no alarm clocks or schedules to worry about, and the best for me was the disconnect from social media, and media in general, that I decided was necessary.

The good weather continues, with blue sky days and sunshine galore. We have been spending a lot of time in the garden, both working and playing. The grass has had it’s first trim of the season, the recently planted radishes and peas have started to sprout,  the garden continues to flourish with the vines, raspberries, gooseberries and apple tree all budding and/or flowering, and they all need watering as we have not seen rain for weeks.

Dyed easter eggs and Züpfe bunnies | Mud, Pies and Pins

As usual, our Easter activities included dyeing eggs and making Züpfe (bread) bunnies. Being at home all the time means I have plenty of time to do some slow cooking. I have always loved cooking, and as the shops here continue to be so well stocked, it’s easy to do a good weekly shop that allows me to get creative in the kitchen as much as I want.  I’ve made smoked turkey breast pieces on the barbecue, as both hot and cold, they are a particular favourite with the boys. For Easter Sunday we had a smoked garlic studded leg of goat. I’ve also stopped putting bread on the shopping list and am just baking what we need.

Other crafting continues as and when I can. I’ve basted a few blocks for the Countdown quilt, when it wasn’t too breezy outdoors. I also made a few middle of the night picot petal flowers when sleep eluded me. I had intended to also work on my Reef Garden crochet sweater this week but I got distracted with a couple of secret sewing projects that I am sure will keep me distracted and busy over the next few weeks.

Looking forward, we should find out this week what’s next for us here. Our lockdown was initially scheduled to run till April 19th. Last week it was extended that for a further week, with an easing of the measures to follow after that. I have no doubt that, regardless of what easing of measures they may introduce, it will still be quite some time before we see a return to any degree of normality. I do not see our day to day routine changing much in the coming months, and, tough as it may be, all we can do is to just keep taking it one day at a time as best we can. Until next week, stay home, stay safe!
