If you read my previous post then you will know that I finished working on my English Paper Pieced (EPP) dragonfly patterns. With those designs finished I found myself playing about with some new ideas once again, and this time I found myself inspired by my niece, and her love of birds.

Earlier this year I made her a quilt that featured the Re Tweet print from Tula Pink’s Spirit Animal line, along with numerous prints from the Birds and Berries Collection by Lauren and Jessi Jung for Moda Fabrics.

Although the quilt was a huge hit I do not think it featured the one bird that is possibly her favourite, the hummingbird, and it was this idea that saw me playing around on the computer to see if I could come up with an EPP hummingbird design.

I choose Liberty lawns to make the EPP hummingbird and it came together so quickly and turned out so well that I couldn’t resist appliquéing it straight onto some pale blue Essex linen and making a zipper backed cushion cover that I bound in more Liberty to finish.

I am completely in love with the new little cushion, as I am sure my niece will be when I eventually surprise her with it. But first it’s back to the design boards for me because I can’t really surprise my niece with a cushion if I don’t surprise my nephews and sons as well!

If you would like to try making your own EPP hummingbird cushion the pattern is now available in my payhip store.

Happy sewing!
